3D point  cloud

The data that comes from ALS is  millions of  3D points  in what’s called a “point cloud”. Each point is a return from an object whether  it is the ground surface ,vegetation , building or something else. This irregular network of points can range from a point every few meters to 10 or 20 points per square meter.

The point cloud is classified  in software to identify if a point landed on the ground surface or on some other object. Typically  the ground surface is what most people are interested in but some applications require the point to be classified to a higher level of detail such as vegetation , buildings, wires  etc.

Typical products are:
 - Digital Elevation Model (DEM) – classified ground strikes
 - Digital Surface Model(DSM) – other data i.e. vegetation, buildings.
